VIRTUAL ZOOM CLASS 3 SESSIONS Texture & Grist : accounting for texture in handspun project planning

$90.00

Examine how texture affects the characteristics of handspun yarn. Students will sample various preparations evaluating how grist changes depending on the level of texture, preparation type, fiber type, and method the fiber is spun. Armed with this knowledge, students will work toward determining the fiber quantity to create the handspun yardage required for their project with confidence.

Techniques to be covered include but are not limited to: sampling, spinning textured fiber preps, measuring and understanding grist, blending/reblending stashed fibers, and combining smooth preps and textured preps.

This will be three, 1.5 hour class sessions to be held live on ZOOM. (4.5 hours total)
Tuesdays, 1-2:30 PM EST
February 11, 18, & 25
Sessions will be recorded with replay access for at least 30 days following the final session of class on February 25. Enrollment will close the morning of February 11.

Students will be emailed with a copy of the below suggested materials and tools, digital handouts, and the classroom link for Zoom, and instructions for how to share work/ask questions between sessions.

Suggested Materials
A mixture of fiber preps and textures. These can be from your stash, collected, carded yourself, etc. Be sure at least one of your selections has some texture to it (i.e. a tweed roving, a textural batt, a flax blend combed top, etc.) I would recommend some combination of the following:
Combed top
roving
batts
rolags/punis

Suggested Tools:
Spinning device (wheel, e-spinner, spindle)
Record Keeping Materials (hole punch, card stock, notebook, tags - your preference)
Yarn Tools: Yarn Balance, WPI Gauge, Yarn Control Card/Twist Angle Guide
